Artist Bio
Born in 1981, this artist received both his M.F.A. and B.F.A. from the Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, in 2004 and 2003 respectively. His solo exhibitions span a wide range of locations, including Touch at ONE AND J. Gallery in Seoul, Korea (2020), Vary Very at the same gallery in 2018, and Horizontal Loop at STARKWHITE Gallery in Auckland in 2017. He also showcased Soom: Variation II at the Xinchang Culture Centre in Shanghai, China, in 2017. Other notable solo exhibitions include Slit Scan at Tauranga Art Gallery (2016), HaaPoom at Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery in Auckland (2015), and MOAMOA, a Decade at City Gallery Wellington (2014). Throughout his career, his work has been featured in numerous prestigious venues such as the Auckland City Art Gallery, Christchurch Art Gallery, and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
In addition to his solo exhibitions, the artist has completed various public commissions, including Form in Formation for the Nelson Sculpture Trust at Richmond Library (2018), Upon a Pond and Drop a Loop at the Albany Swimming Pool (2017), and Conduct Cumulus for SCAPE Public Art in Christchurch (2017). His work has been commissioned by notable institutions, including the Amore Pacific Museum of Art Project on Jeju Island, Korea, and the Mesh Sculpture Trust for Beat Connection / Pumanawa O Te Whenua in Hamilton (2012). His public art commissions demonstrate his wide-reaching impact on the New Zealand art scene and abroad.
Over the years, the artist has received numerous accolades, including the Waikato National Art Award in 2005 and the Goldwater Art Award in 2003. His works are part of significant collections, including those at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, the Chartwell Collection at the Auckland Art Gallery, and Te Papa, Museum of New Zealand. His works are also held in the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, and the Amorepacific Museum of Art Project in Jeju, Korea.
